United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR)
provides humanitarian relief in the United States and around the world and targets places where natural disasters, war, or conflict have done so much damage that communities are unable to recover on their own. UMCOR is not a first-response organization but helps communities over a longer term in recovery efforts. It also helps communities prepare for emergencies and help reduce the risk of disasters through training programs. UMCOR spends 100 percent of designated donations on the projects its donors specify. When the plea has gone out to our UMC of Monroe congregation for assistance with many of the various natural disasters, we have responded with monetary gifts, as well items requested for making cleaning buckets, health kits or birthing kits. We have assisted with Hurricanes Katrina, Irene and Sandy, Japan’s earthquake/tsunami and so many more. Donations are generally made directly to the UMC of Monroe and then, in turn, the church sends out one check to the organization. As UMCOR donors of money and supplies, we join others as the hands and feet of Christ.
